An Orange Order parade in north Belfast has passed off peacefully as more than 100 residents gathered to protest. Protestors held a banner, which read, “Rights marched over,” in silent protest as the parade of around 150 people made its way past the nationalist Ardoyne shops area on the Crumlin Road.

A residents’ group has called for a review of a decision to allow an Orange Order march in Belfast.

Orangemen subsequently applied to the Parades Commission for permission to parade past Ardoyne on the evening of the Twelfth this year. The application was turned down. At the time Cara accused the lodges of jeopardising the “peace and normality” that had returned to the area since 2016.

ARDOYNE residents have hit out at the Parades Commission for standing over its decision to allow an Orange Order parade past the nationalist district on Saturday.

In June both Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association ( CARA) both said they intended to oppose a proposed Orange Order parade through the area, which was later banned by the Parades Commission.

A contested Orange parade in north Belfast has passed off without incident. Three lodges and a band had applied to walk along the Crumlin Road as part of celebrations to mark Orange Heritage Week. The route took them past the nationalist Ardoyne area.
