CHICAGO (CBS) —The Chicago Board of Education on Wednesday approved its five-year strategic plan to address inequality and even the playing field across all Chicago Public Schools. The plan includes changes such as schools no longer being ranked. CPS will measure student success holistically and focus on learning and overall well-being.

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Board of Education unanimously approved the strategic plan during a special board meeting Wednesday at a South Side district office housed in a former school building.

The Chicago Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday to pass a new, five-year strategic plan to address what the district calls “long-standing issues of equity” and “opportunity gaps” in the city’s public schools.

"This plan requires more of us to ensure that every student in every school in every community has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for college, family-sustaining careers, and to actively contribute to the civic life of thriving communities," said Elizabeth Todd-Breland, vice president of the Chicago Board of Education.

Parents, students, teachers and advocates filled dozens of seats in the auditorium at Chicago Public Schools’ downtown offices ahead of the vote to determine the district’s way forward for the next five years.
