Spirit Airlines is reportedly preparing to file for bankruptcy protection within weeks after a merger with Frontier Airlines fell through.

The ultra-low cost carrier is in advanced discussions with bondholders to hammer out a bankruptcy plan that would have support from a majority of creditors,

The negotiations, with a supermajority of the noteholders, have remained productive, advanced materially and are resuming in the near term

Spirit confirmed in a statement that one of its flights from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was diverted to the Dominican Republic on Monday. It said an inspection of the aircraft showed damage consistent with gunfire.

All U.S. airlines and other commercial operators have been banned from flying into Haiti for at least 30 days, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday.
